Global markets have lurched through the summer with thin volumes and continuing investor confusion over inflation, interest rates, oil prices, Middle East conflict, and some degree of AI burnout, but have mostly turned positive since the beginning of August. AI-related stocks have come to dominate many of the indices, and the concerns about this “bubble” bursting and its potential impact on the global economic system are spreading.
The TSX has continued to make new highs through the summer and is up 4% in the last month, closing at a new all-time high Thursday. The Venture exchange struggled through the summer as investors abandoned resource-related junior stocks, losing more than 4%. Much of that loss has been regained since the beginning of August, driven by a rebound in Gold prices. Hopefully, a final push for a Canada/USA trade agreement will succeed and bring some stability to the Canadian economy.
U.S. markets have surged into August, with the S&P 500 and Dow making new all-time highs, and the NASDAQ less than 1% from its last high set two months ago. A small number of AI-related companies, primarily the chip makers and data processors, are driving the gains. Many traditional “Value” sectors and commodity-based issuers are being left behind, with “Fear of Missing Out” (FOMO) holding investors in Tech. The U.S. dollar (USD) peaked at the end of July and has been moving lower, now down 1.25% in August. The Fed’s next meeting is September 15-16, 2026, and speculation continues to lean toward rate increases. A weakening U.S. economy leaves little room for higher borrowing costs.
Gold has moved up since the beginning of August, opening today at USD$4,378.80/oz. Silver has followed along, opening at USD$64.92/oz this morning. Some are already calling it a breakout, but there is much more to come. Precious metal producers are generating impressive free cash flow and are undervalued after being left behind in the AI frenzy.
Copper has remained buoyant through the summer, holding well above the USD$6.00/lb level, reaching toward USD$7.00 last week and still at USD$6.54/lb today.
The CHF Weekly Roundup continues its Summer schedule, with the next issue expected on September 4, 2026.
We are pleased to present our roundup of client news for the period from July 20 to August 14, 2026.
